Cali Swag District members Smoove and Yung share details of seeing the body of their late friend and group member, Mante “M-Bone” Talbert, after he was fatally shot Sunday, May 15.
M-Bone, who was the dancer for the group, was murdered while sitting in a parked car outside of a liquor store in Inglewood, California, his hometown.
Smoove happened to drive past M-Bone’s car immediately after the shots were fired. “When I was driving by, I cruised past, and I heard two shots, and I sped off, thinking I’m being shot at because people know my car,” Smoove said Monday during an interview on Big Boy’s Neighborhood syndicated morning show. “When I stopped, I thought about it. I’m like, ‘I know I saw Bone back there at that store.’”
Smoove got out of his car to see if it had been hit before returning to the scene of the crime. “When I went back … there were no cars around. Bone was right there in the driver’s seat,” he said. “The window had been shot out, and the two people he was with were jumping up and down screaming.”
Smoove said he could tell something bad had happened. “I asked them, ‘What happened? Did he die?’” he said. “You could actually see that Mante passed. I could see through the window that he had been shot.”
When group member Yung arrived, he didn’t initially believe that M-Bone was deceased. “Even me seeing it, it didn’t hit me,” he said. “I’m sitting there looking at my brother. He looks like he’s sleep. … We screaming at him, telling him, ‘Stop playing.’ He wasn’t budging.”
Yung said he does not understand why anyone would hurt M-Bone. “We really just don’t understand,” he said. “Why would you want to do something to him of all people. Everybody has their differences. If you mad at him why wouldn’t you fight? He would fight you back.”
Smoove said he had an emotional meltdown. “I just know I just went crazy,” he said. “I didn’t really know what to think, or who to blame.”
On Sunday, barely a week after the fatal shooting, Smoove, Yung, and JayAre released a tribute song, “How To Do That.” The rappers, who made a name for themselves last year with the success of their single “Teach Me How To Dougie,” used a party record, rather than a ballad, to pay their respects.
Just as infectious as “Teach Me How To Dougie,” “How To Do That” is a call to the dance floor, driven by echoing sound effects, and party handclaps. Its title and chorus is sampled from their break though hit that has had everyone from Michelle Obama, Beyoncé, and Chris Brown doing the dance.
The lyrics boast of their good times and express sorrow for their loss. Yung rhymes, “We came from the gutter and we made it to the top.” JayAre raps, “M-Bone lives through me, Smoove, and Yung. So when we all turn(ed) up, he’s still having fun.”

Kenny Chesney enjoyed a surprise visit on his own stage a couple of weeks ago (from the legendary George Jones)–guess this got him in the mood to spring a little shocker of his own on yet another musical legend.
According to the fan site Chesneyworld, on Saturday night, Chesney delighted fans at Jimmy Buffett’s Nashville appearance when he walked on the Bridgestone Arena’s stage, shook hands with the band, and gave Buffett a hug.
“He’s workin’ cheap tonight!” joked Buffett to the crowd. The pair then sang Buffett’s popular classic “Come Monday,” which Chesney recorded a cover of back in 2004. They also took on Chesney’s own concert staple “Back Where I Come From.”
